Teenager admitted lying in police interview about dates of sexual activity with teacher to 'protect her', trial hears

A teenage boy has admitted lying in an interview with the police about dates of sexual activity with a teacher because he wanted to 'protect her'. Rebecca Joynes, 30, is on trial at Manchester Crown Court. She denies six counts of sexual activity with a child.

The allegations concern two teenage boys - who cannot be named for legal reasons - she met while she was a teacher at a Greater Manchester school. Jurors previously heard Ms Joynes allegedly groomed one pupil with a Trafford Centre shopping trip, before having sex with him.

She then got pregnant by another teenager, the court has heard. On Friday afternoon, May 10, jurors were shown a video showing the cross examination of the second complainant, Boy B.

Of the first complainant, Boy A, he said: "I witnessed him flirting with her, and I heard he had alleged to have slept with her. He had never gone into detail about that with me."

He said when the boy was pulled in to the head's office, the defendant 'started panicking and saying she didn't know what to do', adding: "I said 'give me your phone' and I cleared it.

"I never spoke to [Boy A] about my relationship with Rebecca [Ms Joynes]." He said he initially messaged her on Snapchat to see if she was okay. "Was there a dare or a bet between you and Boy A?," he was asked by defence barrister Michael O'Brien.

"Not at all," Boy B said. It was later suggested to the teenager that there was no kissing before he turned 16. He said that was incorrect and that they had kissed when he was underage.
