Rebecca Joynes' pretty 'naked attempt' to garner sympathy as sex predator teacher faced ultimate fall from grace

With her 'dream' career already in the rear view mirror, Rebecca Joynes desperately fought to save her good name and her liberty. In the process, she was accused of exploiting her gender and motherhood in an ultimately failed bid to gain sympathy from those who would decide her fate.

Prosecutors asked the seven men and five women of the jury to momentarily forget all they had heard about Joynes, the 30-year-old school teacher who groomed a 15-year-old boy for sex with a Trafford Centre shopping trip, before having another teen pupil's baby. Barrister Joe Allman asked them to imagine 'Robert', a 28-year-old teacher, just out of a nine-year relationship, who was lonely and good-looking. 'Robert' received a lot of attention from schoolgirls, who would flatter him and make inappropriate comments towards him.

Mr Allman asked them to imagine that 'Robert' exchanged messages on Snapchat with them, buys one girl a £350 belt and takes her back to his flat, while a second teenager falls pregnant to “Robert”.

“Are you in any doubt about what’s happened here?” he asked them. “You would not have one shred of sympathy for Robert. This thought experiment drags Miss Joynes’ defence into the light.”

She was 'warping' the situation so that 'she almost becomes the victim and the boys the perpetrators', it was claimed. It was not the only way in which Joynes was accused of trying to gain sympathy from the jury. She walked into court with a pink baby’s bonnet tucked into her trousers, visible for all to see.
