Teenage murderer who stabbed man in heart will not be known to the public until he's 18

A 17-year-old murderer who knifed a man in the heart will not be known to the public until he turns 18. A judge has ruled against an application by the Manchester Evening News to name the teenager after a law student was stabbed during a city centre brawl.

The boy, who was 16 at the time, joined an attack on Ahmed Alsrhan, who had been enjoying a coffee with his brother and friends in Manchester's Northern Quarter when he was attacked and pushed into a canal on August 16 last year.

Mr Alsrhan managed to climb out of the canal before going back to Dale Street, where he collapsed. Paramedics performed open heart surgery at the scene but he died later in hospital. He was 33.

Now a judge has decided the teenager, who has no previous convictions but was once caught with a knife at school, should not be named, saying the boy had endured a 'difficult childhood' and was a 'vulnerable and emotionally damaged young man' who needed protection from the glare of publicity.

The youth, who delivered the fatal wound; and Mohammed Al-Enizi Hameed, 36, of Brighton Grove, Rusholme, were each convicted of murder and section 18 wounding following a trial earlier this month for their part in the attack. The youth must serve a minimum 14 years in detention, while Al-Enizi Hameed was handed life with a minimum 25 years behind bars.

Mr Alsrhan was approached by Al-Enizi Hameed who the trial heard asked 'who are you?' before diving into his own pocket. He then shouted to others in Arabic: "Bring the knife - let's kill them."
