Tector century in vain as Afghanistan prevail in first one-day international

Harry Tector's fine century proved in vain as Ireland were beaten by 35 runs against Afghanistan in their first one-day international in Sharjah.

Set a victory target of 311, Ireland made a shaky start to their chase, slipping to 34 for three, before Tector and Lorcan Tucker put on a fourth-wicket partnership of 173.

Tucker then exited on 83, and Tector, with 138 to his name, would eventually follow suit in the contest's final over, the last of eight wickets in Ireland's 275 as they fell short.

Afghanistan, for whom Fazalhaq Farooqi took four wickets, earlier made 310 for five with Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring 121 and Ibrahim Zadran 60.

The match had started with Gurbaz and Zadran - two of three scalps for Theo van Woerkom - combining for a 150-run first-wicket stand after Afghanistan were inserted by their opponents to bat.

The sides play a second ODI on Saturday and a third three days after that, followed by three Twenty20 matches.

Ireland last week recorded their first ever Test win as they defeated Afghanistan by six wickets in Abu Dhabi.
