Team GB Olympics star breaks silence after cheating accusations

Team GB star Jade Jones insisted she is not a drugs cheat following her devastating first round exit at the Olympics.

Jones, who won Olympic gold medals in 2012 and 2016, headed into the Paris Games under a cloud after declining to take an anti-doping test in the run-up to the competition. She decided against the test as she hadn't drunk or eaten for more than 24 hours as she tried to make weight for a fight and was "stressed and panicked".

However, later that same day, Jones did provide a sample to another tester, which came back negative. She was informed by UKAD of a provisional suspension on December 14 but was subsequently cleared to compete.

A consultant psychiatrist's report led to UKAD's no-fault decision, confirming that Jones' "decision to refuse or failure to provide a sample occurred as a direct result of her cognitive impairment" She has, though, faced criticism and questions over whether she should have been allowed to take part.

Following her Olympics exit, Jones spoke for the first time about the furore, saying: “I can confirm that I’ve never taken drugs. I’ve done hundreds of tests and since then I’ve done 13 more tests - more than ever. I’m obviously not on drugs, I just lost.

“I’m very grateful to people for looking into it properly. I made a mistake. They came on dehydration day, I wasn’t in the right mind. You're losing weight and you haven't eaten or drank for a few days. I needed to dehydrate. I become stressed. I thought you could miss three. I signed a piece of paper but I didn’t know what I was signing.
