Taylor shuts down Paul's plea & hints at Cyborg bout

Katie Taylor has laughed off Jake Paul's "stupid" suggestion that the Bray fighter should drop down to featherweight for a rematch of with Amanda Serrano, and said a winter bout with Cris Cyborg is a possibility.

Taylor and Serrano had a landmark battle at Madison Square Garden in New York last April with Taylor retaining her undisputed lightweight world title with a split decision victory.

Last month Paul, who is Serrano's promoter, said: "The only reason [the re-match is not happening] is that Amanda wants to keep her belts at 126lbs so she is the unified champion there, and they said they were going to strip her belts if she didn't defend them right now.

"We have $2m for Katie Taylor to come down to 126lbs, let's see who really is the pound-for-pound best is."

However Taylor (21-0, 6 KO's), speaking on Matchroom Boxing’s podcast Flash Knockdown, insists a rematch will only happen at lightweight.

"What is that about?" she said Taylor. "I’ve never heard such nonsense in all my life. I’ve never heard someone say something as stupid as that to be quite honest.

"I think they’re just trying to play a few games. I’m pretty sure Jake knows I’m not going to get down to 126, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a situation in boxing where the champion wins but has the rematch in a lower weight division. It is real nonsense!

"I don’t know if he’s playing games or it is naivety but the rematch is going to be at 135lbs.

"I was hoping for the rematch to happen straight after the last fight but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen until next year now."

Taylor wants to get back in the ring this winter and said she could take on former UFC champion Cyborg, who has just received her first boxing contract.
