Tavernier and Goldson see transfer 'big problem' raised as Rangers favourite airs his gnawing fear over fees

Alan Hutton has warned Rangers they will struggle to get top dollar for thirtysomething defensive duo James Tavernier and Connor Goldson and reckons the club will jump at the chance of a combined fee from £8million for the pair.

The long-serving captain and vice captain at Ibrox look like their careers in Glasgow could end this summer with Record Sport revealing back in April that they were on the radar of their former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard who is keen to take them to the Saudi Pro League while Tavernier has emerged as a target for Trabzonspor, who have already taken his former Gers team-mates Borna Barisic and John Lundstram.

Goldson is also now being linked with a move to Cypriot side Aris Limassol who Rangers played in the Europa League last season. Tavernier will be 33 in October and Goldson 32 in December and ex Rangers full back Hutton knows that will be a factor in any fee they get. Hutton was 23 when he moved to English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur for £9m back in 2008 but raking that in for the two Englishmen right now would be good business according to the former Scotland star.

He told Football Insider: “If you could get somewhere, £8,9,10million for the both of them they’d obviously snap their hands off. They’ve been great servants for the club, but the ages that they’re at that’s the big problem for me. There’s no sell-on value for this deal.

“I even found out towards the later end of my career, when you start going over 30 your value goes down because there’s no sell-on after that. If you’re 31,32, 33, and you go and sign for a team after that, you’re close to retirement so you’re never really going to make that money back so it’s an interesting one.
