Targett exposed, Lascelles struggled: Man City 5-0 Newcastle United player ratings

Eddie Howe's Newcastle suffered a bruising 5-0 defeat to Manchester City as Pep Guardiola's side bounced back from their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. Newcastle had the first real chance of the game, when Chris Wood met Allan Saint-Maximin's cross but could only head straight at Ederson in the City goal.

Aymerick Laporte went close for the hosts almost immediately after in what was a close opening period. Joao Cancelo then met Kevin de Bruyne's far-post cross but steered the ball wide.

City took the lead on 18 minutes when Gundogan's pass opened up the Newcastle defence and Raheem Sterling turned home Cancelo's knockdown. Newcastle did have the ball in the back of the net when Jamaal Lascelles' header from corner hit Bruno Guimaraes and was poked him by Chris Wood, but the Brazilian midfielder was in an offside position.

The home side doubled their lead just before the break when Dubravka couldn't gather a corner, and Laporte turned the ball home following Dias' challenge on the United keeper.

Newcastle struggled for possession early in the second half, but created a good opportunity which saw Bruno fire well over. But City made it 3-0 on the hour mark, again from a corner, this time Rodri heading home at the near post.

Eddie Howe brought on Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier for Chris Wood and Emil Krafth as the pair got some much-needed gametime after lengthy injuries. And it was Wilson who had the chance to pull one back after being played in by Jacob Murphy, only for Ederson to save with his feet. Phil Foden rubbed salt into the wounds with a late goal, turning home Zincheko's shot from close range. Sterling then made it 5-0 after Grealish played him in as City scored twice in injjury-time.
