Sydney FC romp to A-League Women title with grand final win over Western United

Sydney FC secured a fourth A-League Women championship with a dominant 4-0 win over Western United in the 2023 grand final at CommBank Stadium.

Victory, courtesy of a brace from the outstanding Madison Haley, a header by captain Natalie Tobin and a Princess Ibini penalty, complimented this year’s premiership success and helped banish memories of defeat in the past two seasons’ title-deciders.

Sydney, playing in their home town but not officially the home team, roared out of the blocks and were two goals up with just 18 minutes on the clock after a pair of corners caused havoc in the United box.

Haley, whose late goal against Melbourne Victory a week ago had sent Sydney into Sunday’s title decider, delivered the first blow with a powerful downwards header in the fourth minute before Tobin doubled the lead with a looping effort following an unconvincing punch clear from goalkeeper Hillary Beall.

Ibini, in her seventh grand final appearance, kept her cool from the penalty spot in the 64th minute having won the spot kick herself, before Haley bundled the ball over the line as time ran out to claim her second of the night and seal a comfortable, but memorable, victory.
