Swimming pool closes down as 'not economically viable' to carry out repairs

A swimming pool at Radcliffe Leisure Centre has been closed due to the failure of a heating system.

The temporary pool was opened in 2015 but had to be closed at the beginning of August to repair the heating system.

But it failed again and had to be closed for a second time on August 24. Now bosses have decided to close it for good as the site will be demolished in December to make way for a new school.

Bury Leisure made the announcement on its website. It said: "Regrettably we have had to take the difficult decision to permanently close the temporary swimming pool at Radcliffe Leisure Centre. The pool must close on grounds of health and safety due to a major failure of the pool heating system."

The statement continued: "The pool is permanently closed because major issues have arisen with the pool heating system.

"The pool was first closed for 12 days from 7 August while a repair was arranged. This was initially successful, but the heating system failed again soon after meaning the pool had to close for a second time on 24 August.

"Since 24 August, further investigation has revealed significant corrosion to the heating pipework and steel supports, particularly within the section directly under the swimming pool. This requires major, costly repair work costing in the region of £22,000.

"Such repairs would take to the end of September to complete, leaving only 10 weeks to use the pool before the leisure centre closes on 10 December, to make way for the new Radcliffe Academy.

"Under these circumstances, it is not economically viable to carry out further high-cost repairs to the pool."
