Swansea City 2-3 Bournemouth: Jamie Paterson stunner not enough as hosts bow out of Carabao Cup

Swansea City are out of the Carabao Cup after going down 3-2 at the hands of Bournemouth in a thrilling five-goal encounter at the Swansea.com Stadium.

Matt Grimes gave the hosts the lead after just nine minutes, rifling home from the spot after Chris Mepham was penalised for handball.

Bournemouth were surprisingly second-best for much of the first half, but nearly headed into the interval on level terms. Hamed Traore turned his man brilliantly in the box, but saw his low effort denied by the post.

But the Premier League side showed their class as the contest wore on, with David Brooks and Traore both firing home to seemingly put the game beyond the hosts.

Jamie Paterson's stunning late effort restored parity late on, before Ryan Christie came off the bench to win the game for the visitors deep into stoppage time.

Having produced a positive first-half showing at Preston, Swansea once again showed promising signs in the opening 45 minutes.

However, as was the case at Deepdale, they lost their way after the break, and that lack of resilience will likely be troubling to boss Michael Duff. The Northern Irishman will certainly be hoping for a few more new faces through the door before the close of the transfer window, with several members of his side once again running out of steam under the lights in SA1.

Duff made five changes for the visit of the Cherries, in a competition which has so far yielded his only win in charge of the Swans. On that occasion, they blitzed their way to a 3-0 win over League One side Northampton Town.
