Supermarket wars in Greater Manchester town as big name plans new store following bust-up

A new Lidl store with a bakery could open in Stockport. The supermarket submitted a planning application in April to open a site off Wellington Road North and Sparthfield Road, in Heaton Norris.

It includes a sales area; warehouse; chiller room; bakery; and customer toilets. Cycle parking is in the plans; as well as a car park with 98 spaces; and a delivery bay. Two new pedestrian routes are proposed from Sparthfield Road and Wellington Road North, providing direct access to the store through the car park.

A new priority junction would be created 'located further away from the A6' for vehicle access to the site. The land was previously used as a Mercedes Benz car dealership and showroom, but is currently vacant.

Planning documents for the proposed new Lidl store states: "There are currently no Lidl stores within
