Super Falcons, Lionesses of Cameroon in titanic battle

Skipper Rasheedat Ajibade was the star of Nigeria’s 4-0 defeat of Ethiopia in the second leg of their Paris 2024 qualifier in Abuja…on Tuesday.

After dispatching Ethiopia 5-1 on goals aggregate, the Super Falcons of Nigeria will tackle old rivals, Super Falcons , in the next round of the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifying series, before a final playoff against either South Africa or Tanzania.

The Falcons have failed to qualify for the Olympics for the past 15 years.

On Tuesday in Abuja, they saw off Ethiopia 5-1 on aggregate to set up the titanic clash against Cameroon between February 19 and 28, 2024.

The Indomitable Lionesses overturned a 0-2 loss in Uganda by winning 3-0 at home after extra time.

The Super Falcons have won five and drawn one of their head-to-head meetings against the Lionesses of Cameroon.

In July last year, the Super Falcons defeated the Lionesses 1-0 at the WAFCON in Morocco. Before then in 2016, the Super Falcons forced some bitter pills down the throat of Cameroonians in the final of that year’s WAFCON in Yaoundé. The match watched by the Cameroonian President, Paul Biya, ended 1-0 in favour of Nigeria, with Desire Oparanozie accounting for the lone goal.

The overall winners of the third-round clash between the Super Falcons and the Lionesses will meet the winners of another third-round clash between South Africa and Tanzania in a playoff to book the flight to Paris next summer.

The Black Queens of Ghana will face Zambia, while Tunisia and Morocco will square up in the next round.
