Super Eagles to be 9billion richer if they win AFCON title

Semi-Ajayi in action against Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will receive the sum of $7m (N8.9bn) prize money, if they beat the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire in today’s final of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations.

Nigeria reached the final after beating the Bafana Bafana of South Africa 4-2 in a penalty shootout after 120 minutes of football which ended in a 1-1 at the Stade de la Paix, Bouke on Wednesday.

The two finalists of the AFCON, Nigeria and hosts, Cote d’Ivoire have already pocketed $4m each for advancing to the final.

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) had announced a 40 per cent increase in prize monies before the commencement of the tournament.

According to CAF, the winners will receive $7m, $2m more than the last edition in Cameroon.

The runners-up of the AFCON will now go home with $4m (N5bn), while the losing semi-finalists, South Africa and DR Congo will each pocket $2.5m as the four quarter-finalists takes home $1.3m each.

“CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the prize money of the AFCON, and all its other major competitions,” CAF boss, Patrice Motsepe said.

“We have increased the prize money of the AFCON winner to USD 7,000 000, which is a 40 percent increase from the previous AFCON prize money.

“I am confident that a portion of the prize money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations,” he added.
