Tinubu pulls out as Shettima leads FG’s delegation to AFCON final

VP-Shettima celebrates with Super Eagles after their semi-finals win over South Africa.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed his Vice, Kashim Shettima, to lead a presidential delegation to the final of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations holding today in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

There were earlier reports that Tinubu would attend today’s final to cheer the Super Eagles against the host, Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire.

But a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Office of the Vice-President, Stanley Nkwocha, yesterday, stated otherwise.

Today’s final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan is a rematch between the two teams in this year’s AFCON. The Super Eagles won their group tie 1-0.

According to Nkwocha, the match will rekindle the memories of Nigeria’s 1-0 victory against the hosts in the group stage secured through Captain William Troost-Ekong’s penalty.

He said Tinubu believes Shettima’s presence at the final alongside the delegation is a testament to the government’s unwavering support for the team and its dedication to their success.

“The Federal Government calls on all Nigerians, both at home and abroad, to unite in support of the Super Eagles.

“The government also enjoin all Nigerians to raise their voices in encouragement, and create a wave of national pride that will propel the team to glory,” he said.

Recall that Shettima had earlier represented Tinubu at the semifinal, when the Super Eagles defeated the Bafana Bafana of South Africa.
