Sundowns star Shalulile back in training after spell on sidelines

Mamelodi Sundowns have received a welcome boost as star player Peter Shalulile is back in training after a lengthy period on the sidelines.

The 29-year-old missed the final few weeks of action leading up to the World Cup break.

There were conflicting reports regarding Shalulile's reasons for unavailability, with there even being suggestions that the Namibian forward was attempting to force a move away from The Brazilians.

Those reports were denied by Mokwena as he insists that Shalulile was injured and that he is on the first steps on the road to recovery.

"Peter is now one week on the pitch and on the green grass with the team," Mokwena said.

"The protocol first is to return to training, and to return for availability for selection. He has only gone past the first stage of rehabilitation.

"Everything depends on the individual and the biomechanics, physiological reaction and the player's reactions to medical treatments."

Sundowns will welcome Jose Riveiro's Orlando Pirates at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Friday. It will be the first DStv Premiership match after the World Cup break. The Brazilians sit top of the pile while their opponents sit in fifth place.

Mokwena did not confirm whether or not Shalulile will be risked against the Buccaneers. However, he hinted that he may lack sharpness as he has not played in any matches since returning.

"He has not played any friendly matches, but he is taking part in full training," concluded Mokwena.

Kick-off is at 15:30.
