SuperSport coach Gavin Hunt on Sundowns: 'Gap is so much bigger than everybody in SA'

SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has admitted the gap between Mamelodi Sundowns and the rest of the league is a sizeable one after his team's 1-0 loss to the champions on Monday evening.

Although SuperSport had several opportunities to change the outcome of the match, a first-half goal from Neo Maema secured a 14-point cushion for the top-of-the-table team.

Matsatsantsa headed into the match as the last team to taste victory against Sundowns but failed to leave the same impression despite matching the defending champions pound for pound at Loftus Versfeld.

"We are just disappointed. I thought we deserved more but it didn't happen," Hunt said.

"Two games in a row, a couple of decisions here and there with a big one tonight again, so that's unfortunate."

Hunt set his team up to tactically match Sundowns but felt that his side's performance was good despite losing the match.

"We did a few things tactically tonight, which I thought worked. But obviously it doesn't work because you don't win. You can only control the performance. You can't control the results all the time, but I thought we were good against a very good side.

"I think they might have had the ball, which they will have, but we created more opportunities.

"I commend the players, they worked hard. I thought we were good value for certainly a little bit more than what we got tonight, but it is what it is, and we move on.”

Hunt felt that Sundowns should be judged on their success in the Champions League, rather than how well they do in the PSL.

"They should be in the semi-final or final every year. That's how you should judge them because the gap is so much bigger than everybody in South Africa.

"It's unfortunate, but it is the way the game has gone at some point."
