Sundowns shocked: How Stellies coach Steve Barker inspired his players to pull off upset

Stellenbosch head coach Steve Barker has revealed what he told his players at half-time, which inspired their 2-1 comeback victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final at Athlone Stadium on Saturday.

The visiting team from Tshwane - the PSL champions supreme - took a fortuitous lead on the cusp of half-time as Aubrey Modiba's long-range effort hit the upright and went over the goal line after striking veteran goalkeeper Lee Langeveld's back.

However, three minutes into the second half, Iqraam Rayners scored to send the home crowd into a frenzy. Nine minutes later, the 27-year-old completed his brace, and the Stellies supporters roared even louder.

"If you have a player like Iqraam Rayners in your team, you always have an opportunity to score goals, so he's been magnificent in this Nedbank Cup so far - and he's scored two in every round; well done to him," Barker told reporters.

"But I can't single out any player. Every single player, in my opinion, could have been Man of the Match - so I'm really proud of a really good performance from the team."
