Gallants leave it late to draw with Maritzburg in epic relegation scrap

Maritzburg United and Marumo Gallants played to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday evening in Pietermaritzburg in a DStv Premiership relegation scrap that ebbed and flowed throughout.  

With Chippa United winning 3-2 against Richards Bay,  they now have a three point gap over Maritzburg and have drawn level with Gallants on 29 points.

Maritzburg opened the scoring in the first half thanks to Brandon Theron to take a 1-0 lead into half-time.

Gallants pulled a goal back through Ranga Chivaviro in the 73rd minute before Maritzburg again took the lead at 2-1 thanks to an Amadou Soukouna penalty.

Gallants tied up the match at 2-2 when Mpho Mvelase scored in added time in the second half. 

In other matches played on Wednesday evening, Amazulu drew 2-2 with champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City and Golden Arrows played to a goalless draw.

Sundowns had established a 2-0 lead by the 58th minute thanks to Bongani Zungu and Peter Shalulile before Ramahlwe Mphahlele and Sede Junior Dion scored to make it 2-2 in the second half.

Chippa United scored twice in the final fifteen minutes as they came back from 2-0 down in their win over Richards Bay.

Sakhile Hlongwa and Somla Ntsundwana gave Richards Bay a 2-0 lead at half-time before Etiosa Idhodaro and a brace from Aviwe Mqokozo brought the Chilli Boys a much-needed win.
