Sundowns shake up coaching roles with Mokwena taking sole charge, Mngqithi demoted
Manqoba Mngqithi has been demoted to senior coach at Mamelodi Sundowns in what has been termed by the club as changes necessitated by "poor performances and unconvincing victories".
Rhulani Mokwena takes over as the sole Sundowns head coach with immediate effect, with Steve Komphela moving into the first team coaching position while Mngqithi gets dropped into the role of senior coach.
In a statement, the club said the changes were necessitated by "its recent average and lacklustre performances are contrary to this objective".
The decision comes from the fallout of Sundowns' 3-0 hammering against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, ending their MTN8 title defence in an unceremonious manner.
Sundowns are still on top of the log with 22 points from their 10 matches, but their losses against SuperSport United and TS Galaxy had similarities in terms of how they were soundly beaten by Pirates on Saturday.
Mokwena's first game in charge will be against Maritzburg United in Pietermaritzburg on Tuesday.
