Sundowns defeat sees Al Ahly's Pitso question VAR absence from CAF Champions League

Al Ahly head coach Pitso Mosimane has lamented the lack of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) in CAF club competitions after their 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mosimane and the man he brought to Ahly - Percy Tau - could not get one over their former club, where they both rose to legendary status. Mosimane led the Brazilians to five league titles before being snapped up by the Egyptian giants.

Tau, meanwhile, won two league titles and the CAF Champions League; while in the 2016/2017 season, he was named Footballer of the Season, Players' Player of the Season, as well as scooping the Golden Boot award.

There was plenty at stake ahead of the match, with Ahly still hurting from the 5-0 thrashing they were handed by the Brazilians, who added more salt to the wounds after Thapelo Morena's late winner in the CAF Champions League Group A encounter.

Mosimane's men had the better of the opportunities while there was a controversial moment when 'Downs keeper Kennedy Mweene appeared to handle the ball outside the box. However, it was not spotted by the referee leading Mosimane to call for technology in CAF competitions.

"Of course, we are very sad about the result. It's a match that I didn't want to lose. It's part of football. These things happen in football," Mosimane said, as per Al Ahly's official website.

"I can't blame the team. We had many opportunities to score. I always knew that if we had any threat, it will come from counter-attacks.

"I congratulate Mamelodi Sundowns on winning today's game. I think we have to qualify through the hardest way. We have to try and win in South Africa. We can do that.

Mosimane also felt VAR could have helped with Kennedy Mweene appearing to handle the ball outside the box in the second half.
