Pitso and Al Ahly coming with a 'vengeance' against high-flying Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns are smooth sailing at the top of the DStv Premiership standings, despite suffering a shocking setback against Maritzburg United last weekend.

The defeat, however, still sees the Brazilian hold a healthy lead of 15 points over second-place Royal AM, while Kaizer Chiefs, in third place, are 16 points adrift with four games in hand. Three of those matches might not even be played, depending on the verdict of their case against the Premier Soccer League.

Even if they were to win the remaining matches, Sundowns would still have a minor lead and are well-equipped to see the season out and secure a sixth consecutive league title.

They have already bagged the MTN8 crown for the first time in 14 years and, on Tuesday, cruised to a 6-0 Nedbank Cup Round of 16 rout of Mathaithai FC, as they remain on course for a domestic clean-sweep.

But their historic first-ever win against Al Ahly on Egyptian soil a fortnight ago must be uppermost in the minds of its fans and more so for Sundowns' former boss and current Red Devils mentor Al Ahly, Pitso Mosimane. 

"We are heading into a very tough encounter," Sundowns co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi told reporters ahead of the second round CAF Champions League Group A clash against Al Ahly.

"It is a game that has so much insight and a game that can determine our season. It is also a game of consequence.

"Both Al Ahly and ourselves are looking for a result that can maybe get us into the quarter-finals, or stamp their position in the group stages, also considering that they lost the recent match against us at their home ground."
