Sunderland's Ross Stewart included in League One team of the year, voted for by fellow pros

Sunderland's Ross Stewart has been included in the PFA League One team of the season - the line-up voted for by fellow pros. The striker was an ever-present for the Black Cats in the league last season, finishing as runner-up in the scoring charts with 24 goals in his 46 starts, before adding two more goals in the play-offs to help Alex Neil's men win promotion to the Championship.

And his exploits in his first full season in England earned him international recognition with Scotland, winning his first cap earlier this week, and also from fellow players in the third tier who voted for his inclusion in the team of the season. Overall, the Professional Footballers' Association League One team of the year was made up of players from nine different clubs, with Stewart Sunderland's only representative.

Only champions Wigan Athletic and losing play-off semi-finalists MK Dons had more than one player included, each contributing two representatives. The team included Portsmouth's on-loan Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, behind a defence of Ricardo Santos (Bolton Wanderers), Michael Ihiekwe (Rotherham United), Jack Whatmough (Wigan), and Harry Darling (MK Dons).

Cameron Brannagan (Oxford United), Scott Twine (MK Dons), and Barry Bannan (Sheffield Wednesday), made up the midfield. And Stewart was accompanied by fellow strikers Will Keane (Wigan) and Cole Stockton (Morecambe).

Stewart was last month named the League One PFA Vertu Motors Fans' Player of the Year, seeing off competition from Keane, Bannan, Twine, Alfie May (Cheltenham Town), and Wes Burns (Ipswich Town) after a fan vote. He was also named Sunderland's Player of the Year, voted for by branches of the Sunderland Branch Liaison Council.
