Sunderland's match against Burton suspended by medical emergency

Sunderland's match with Burton Albion was temporarily suspended on Tuesday night due to a medical emergency in the stands.

The players were just four minutes into the League One fixture when referee Robert Lewis paused proceedings after a fan fell ill in the West Stand.

Both teams were ordered to return to the changing rooms while stewards cleared a path to allow emergency services access to the stricken supporter.

The game was held up for around 50 minutes while the fan received treatment before he was eventually taken to the hospital. 

A notice inside the Stadium of Light was shared on the scoreboard, informing fans the 'temporary suspension' came as a result of a medical emergency and that play was expected to restart shortly.

Sunderland also shared an update on social media, posting: "There is a break in play due to a medical emergency in the stand.

"Everyone at #SAFC sends the supporter our very best wishes."

The game resumed after players took part in a 10-minute warm-up.
