Sunderland near transfer agreement for defender

Sunderland are closing in on securing a deal for a defender, as per a report from Football Insider.

The report states that the Black Cats are looking to agree a deal for a central defender in what remains of the January transfer window.

A name has not been suggested, however, the club are confident of striking a deal for a centre-back before the window slams shut at 11pm.

It appears that Lee Johnson’s dismissal has not impacted the club’s search for a new defender, with the Wearsiders already bringing in Danny Batth this month.

Sunderland embarked on their fourth successive season in the third-tier at the start of the campaign and currently find themselves in third place and two points off the top, although, they have played two games more than Rotherham United at the League One summit, and four games more than Wigan Athletic in second.

The verdict

The clock is ticking for the Black Cats but there does appear to be confident that a deal for a defender can be struck before the 11pm deadline.

It remains to be seen if a move for a younger, progressive centre-back is likely to be made, or if adding additional experience is what the club believes will help deliver success.

Sunderland have been excellent in periods this season, proving to be a class above some of the top teams in the division, however, there have also been some awful lows, with their 6-0 defeat at Bolton Wanderers perhaps the lowest point since entering the third-tier.
