Sunderland managerial candidate convinced by Everton opportunity

Sunderland have been considering their options since getting rid of Lee Johnson at the weekend but it looks like Duncan Ferguson won’t be one of them, with Pete O’Rourke reporting that he will stay at Everton.

The current Toffees coach has been in the running for the role as reported by The Northern Echo and the chance to finally test his luck at the top job could have been tempting for the former player.

However, it looks as though he may now stay on at Goodison Park, with new boss Frank Lampard wanting him to stay as part of his backroom team. It was unclear as to whether or not he would be kept on at Everton with Lampard set to take the reigns.

If he was allowed to leave, that would have paved the way for him to potentially try his luck at the Stadium of Light. Having only ever taken charge of a side in a caretaker role – and both of those stints came with the Toffees – it would have meant he had his first crack at the job on a full-time basis.

However, it now appears as if he will have to wait for his chance to manage a club, with Ferguson set to hold onto his role at Goodison Park.

Whilst Chronicle Live has reported that no contact has even been made to potentially appoint Ferguson yet though, it looks as though the Black Cats may not have chance to even think about doing so now, with the latest news seemingly ruling him out of the race for the vacant role.

The Verdict

Duncan Ferguson certainly deserves a chance at management at some point in his career but it doesn’t look like the opportunity will arise for him now.

The current Everton coach is loyal to the Toffees and looks like he will be happy to stay on under Frank Lampard. That could be a good combination and could be one that works wonders at Goodison Park.
