Ex-Premier League owner gives verdict on Sunderland managerial vacancy

The Black Cats are in search of a new manager following the dismissal of Lee Johnson last week. 

Johnson lost his final game at the club 6-0 to Bolton Wanderers, which the hierarchy believed was the final straw after a run of recent poor form. 

Sunderland have lost their two league games since, with Mike Dodd in charge of the team on an interim basis. 

However, Jordan believes Warnock would be an ideal candidate to turn things around at the Stadium of Light.

Speaking on Talksport, Jordan claimed the 73-year old is who Sunderland should be seeking to hire. 

“I think people like Neil Warnock are better suited for that job,” said Jordan, via HITC.

“He will put his arm around this Sunderland chairman and guide him in the right direction.

“I’m telling you, he’s a pleasure to work with because he makes it easy. And this guy [Dreyfus] needs a bit of help. This football club, it’s a big nut to crack in terms of the disappointment of where they are and the expectation of the fans.  

“You need a manager who’s really able to work alongside him.”

Jordan worked with Warnock during the manager’s stint in charge of Crystal Palace from 2007 to 2010 and then again in 2014. 

Warnock has managed across the four tiers of English football in a long and storied career as a manager. 

His last position came at Championship side Middlesbrough from 2020 to 2021. However, he was dismissed after a terrible run of form after only 17 months in charge. 

Warnock could be a good short-term appointment to turn things around. 

Sunderland need to find their form again if they have ambitions to get promoted this season.

But Warnock’s style of play isn’t easy on the eye, which could rub some Sunderland fans the wrong way.
