Sunderland man makes promotion claim

Sunderland Echo

The versatile midfielder was speaking in the wake of seeing his side lose 2-1 at home to Sky Bet League One strugglers Doncaster Rovers as their current woes went from bad to worse on Saturday.

The Black Cats are currently manager-less following the departure of Lee Johnson and are currently seeking to appoint a replacement for the former Bristol City man at present.

Despite recent results not going their way, Winchester was quick to state his belief that the squad has the right amount of quality to achieve their ambition of getting promoted this season, as he said the following recently:

“There is no ifs, buts and maybes, you have to deliver and obviously we fell short but we have players in that changing room which I believe can deliver.”

Sunderland spent heavily in the winter transfer window to bring in the likes of Patrick Roberts, Jermain Defoe and Jack Clarke and will be hopeful that their new attacking options will click into gear sooner rather than later.

Next up for the Black Cats is a trip to Cheltenham Town on Tuesday night.

The Verdict

Sunderland are in quite a perilous position at present and are in need of a manager that can really galvanise what is an extremely talented, yet underperforming group of players.

Losing to Doncaster was a new low for the team and they will know that both the fans and the club hierarchy expects so much better.

They are still in the race for promotion, but their results will have to turn around quickly if they are still to be in with a shot of finishing in the top two.

Otherwise they are at risk of being cut adrift by their rivals.
