Sunderland in transfer battle for 33-year-old defender

Sunderland are interested in signing Derby County left-back Craig Forsyth, a report from Cypriot outlet Goal has claimed.

Forsyth has spent the last nine years of his career with Derby, making over 250 appearances for the club in all competitions.

But with his contract at Pride Park expiring this summer, the defender is now set to become a free agent.

As a result, it now seems as though the 33-year-old is starting to attract plenty of attention from elsewhere, as clubs continue their search for new signings.

According to this latest update, Sunderland are now interested in a move to sign Forsyth, as they prepare for their return to the Championship in 2022/23, following promotion via the League One play-offs at the end of last season.

However, it seems the Black Cats are not the only club looking to secure a deal for Forsyth this summer, with APOEL – who finished third in the Cypriot top-flight last season – also credited with an interest in the 33-year-old.

Indeed, with Cirkin still only 20-years-old and yet to play at Championship level, Forsyth’s experience of this level could be useful both in terms of helping Cirkin to adapt, and having a reliable option to step in if he struggles to do that.

With the expiration of his Derby contract meaning Forsyth will also be available on a free transfer, which should help Sunderland from a financial perspective as well, this does feel like a deal that could be worth pursuing for
