Sunderland 1-1 Rotherham United player ratings as Matete is off-the-pace and Stewart is nullified

Sunderland were bailed out by a last-minute own-goal, as they forced a draw against promotion-chasing Rotherham United. The Black Cats trailed to Michael Ihiekwe's first half header from a set-piece, but the Millers defender then put through his own net to gift Sunderland a point.

Sunderland dropped to fifth in the table, but now know that a win on the final day at Morecambe will guarantee a play-off place. But this was a below-par performance from the Wearsiders, who failed to manage a single shot on target all evening.

Prior to the own-goal, the closest they came was a free-kick from substitute Alex Pritchard which found the sidenetting. Rotherham were the better side throughout, but the draw meant they missed out on the chance of all-but securing automatic promotion.

Here's how James Hunter rated the Sunderland players.

Nothing he could do about the goal, and made a couple of decent saves

Did OK as part of the back three

Won his headers

Played on the left side of the back three and improved in the second half

One or two minor errors, but generally did OK in the wingback role

Worked hard

Booked early, looked off-the-pace, and might have been replaced earlier

Kept going to the end

So good at the weekend, but his deliveries were hit-and-miss against Rotherham

Struggled to make an impact

Largely nullified by the Rotherham defence

For Broadhead 53mins. Brought a bit more of a spark, and went close with a free-kick

For Hume 60mins. Provided the cross which forced the own-goal

For Matete 70mins. Gave Sunderland a bit more attacking threat

Hoffmann, Xhemajli, Neil, Roberts
