Summer transfers will give Manchester United something they need

Without the attraction of Champions League football to offer to prospective signings this summer, Manchester United could face an uphill struggle from the start in the upcoming transfer window.

United missed out on the opportunity to secure their place back in Europe's premier club competition after being beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in last Wednesday evening's Europa League final at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao.

After a wretched Premier League campaign, United knew their last hope of securing any form of European football for next season rested on beating Spurs. However, Brennan Johnson's first half prod brought that dream to an end.

As a result, United will go without any form of European football for the first time since the 2014/15 season.

Champions League qualification alone is worth just north of £15.5million, with the additional bonuses, such as gate receipts and broadcast money, increasing the revenue that can be generated as a result of dining at European football's top table to at least £85m.

With the squad needing to be gutted and £89m owed in transfer fees from previous windows, United's failure to secure additional revenue streams is a massive blow ahead of what promises to be one of the biggest transfer windows the club has ever faced.

Head coach Ruben Amorim wants to make wholesale changes to the squad. However, now that Champions League football won't be on offer, United will find it hard to attract players who will believe they belong in Europe's premier club competition.
