Strangest penalty run-up ever? Brazilian footballer goes viral again for 2019 effort

There’s no right or wrong way to take a penalty in football.

Many place the ball down on the spot, take a few steps back, pick your spot and then kick the ball at goal.

But not everyone adopts that method.

Some are more creative in their run-ups, including Paul Pogba, who often takes a plethora of small steps before reaching the ball.

Caíque Oliveira also decided against taking a simple run-up.

In fact, Oliveira’s run-up in the 2019 Copa Verde final for Paysandu and Cuiabá was so bizarre it makes Pogba’s penalty technique look normal.

The two teams could not be separated and the champions were to be decided in a penalty shootout.

Oliviera was the fifth penalty taker and Paysandu would have been crowned champions had he scored.

However, Oliveira fluffed his lines in spectacular fashion.

Oliviera began his run-up outside the box. It took him around 20 seconds to reach the ball as he took a number of small steps.

Oliviera didn’t have a go when he reached the ball, though.

The Paysandu man came to a stand-still, then quickly took one step back and tried to place the ball in the corner.

He managed to send the goalkeeper the wrong way but, unfortunately for him, he ended up missing the target.

What on earth have we just watched?! All that effort, just for that?!

If you are going to put that much effort into your run-up, you just have to score. Miss and you look incredibly silly.

Unfortunately for Oliviera, it ended in disaster for him.

That miss proved costly for Paysandu as Cuiabá went on to win the shootout and became Copa
