Stoke City told they need 'massive wake-up call' after Hearts defeat

Stoke City fell to a 2-1 defeat in their final friendly of the summer against Heart of Midlothian at Tynecastle.

A brace from Scotland international Lawrence Shankland was enough to send Michael O'Neill's side travelling back south of the border with a third defeat of pre-season, despite Tyrese Campbell pulling one back for the Potters, after also being beaten by Accrington Stanley and Bristol Rovers earlier this month.

Shankland's first came just before half-time after turning past Joe Bursik in the Stoke goal and a second followed minutes from full-time after finishing at the second time of asking after an initial strike was blocked. Campbell was on hand to score just the side's fourth goal of the summer with seconds remaining after turning in a low Josh Tymon cross.

It's fair to say Potters were far from pleased with what they saw in Scotland. Here is a selection of the reaction from social media after the Hearts loss.

So when does pre-season start lads?

Pre-season means nothing. We had great pre-seasons under Jones and Rowett but that got us nowhere in the league.

It sounds like the only positive is that we achieved more than nil.

Better second half Smallbone, good on the ball, few games time he will be crucial.

You should give everyone who spent time and effort to make it all the way up there to watch that drizzle their money back...

So much better in that second half gayle and smallbone made all the difference with a decent LCB we should be alright.

I know it’s pre-season but MON should be doing far better with this squad.

Very worrying pre-season!

I know its only pre-season but doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence for the upcoming season.

Wouldn't even compete in the Scottish Championship.
