Stockport mill fire LIVE: Building erupts into flames with smoke seen billowing into sky - updates

Emergency services are at the scene of a huge mill fire in Stockport this evening. The Compstall Mills building, in Romiley, is currently on fire with plumes of smoke seen billowing into the sky.

A number of police and fire service vehicles are at the scene off Andrew Street, in Compstall, as efforts remain ongoing to tackle the blaze.

Pictures and videos shared with the M.E.N show huge plumes of smoke, which can be seen for miles, as a large number of resources remain at the scene.

The cause of the blaze has not yet been confirmed. The Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for more details.

GMFRS have urged local residents to keep their windows and doors closed due to the amount of smoke coming from the fire.

An 'avoid the area' warning has also been issued by the fire service.

The Compstall Mills buildings, which are now derelict, were originally built in the 1830s - almost 200 years ago.

Other buildings on the site were completed a number of years later in the 1840s.

The Compstall Parl Estate is currently listed for sale with a guide price of £2.5 million.

New video footage taken at the scene show the scale of the fire this evening.
