Stirling University swimmer cements place among British Olympic greats after double Paris medal haul

Stirling University swimmer Duncan Scott has taken his place among Team GB’s all-time greatest Olympians after securing yet another medal in Paris.

The 27-year-old took silver in the men’s 200m individual medley in the pool in the French capital – making it an incredible EIGHT medals from three games.

He finished as the runner -up to French poster boy Leon Marchand, who claimed his fourth gold of the games so far.

The silver means Scott now holds more Olympic medals than cycling icon Sir Chris Hoy – even though Hoy has an astounding six gold medals to his name.

At the 2016 Rio Olympics, Scott won a silver in the 4×200m freestyle relay. He also won another silver in the 4×100m medley relay.

At the delayed Tokyo 2020 Olympics Scott won gold in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and silver in the men’s medley relay. He also took silver in the individual 200m freestyle and 200IM.

“I’d like to think I went head-to-head with Leon for a little bit of the race, but the guy is the best in the world,” said Scott on his latest medal.

Scott was over a second adrift and just missed his own British best, with China’s Tokyo 2021 champion Shun Wang taking bronze.

Paying tribute to superstar Marchand, who denied him what would have been a long-awaited first individual gold to go with the 4x200m freestyle relay golds won in Tokyo and earlier this week in Paris, Scott said: “My target was to really push myself out there. I know that I’ve got a really strong freestyle – and I know those guys are thinking about my freestyle when it’s coming into the later stages of the race.
