Stewartry record biggest win of the season with 69-14 triumph at Murrayfield Wanderers

Stewartry recorded their biggest win of the season with a thumping victory over Murrayfield Wanderers in Edinburgh.

The Blacks travelled to the capital looking to get back to winning away after narrowly missing out against Whitecraigs at home the weekend before.

And Sandy Currie’s men emphatically bounced back, scoring 10 tries against the Wanderers and moving up into fourth in the National 4 Table.

Despite starting the game on the front foot with a successful penalty from Andrew Picken after just one minute, Stewartry fell behind early after conceding a penalty try under the posts.

As ever, though, they fought back and through their captain Angus Lindsay were able to get their first try of the game and regain the lead.

The next few minutes were tense, with a lot of rugby being played in the Stewartry 22, but a big shot from flanker Chris Root spurred the team into action.

From there, the Greenlaw side put three quickfire tries past Murrayfield to secure the bonus point before the half-time whistle – Sam Tait, Jason Forsyth and Lochy Spence getting the scores.

After the break, Stewartry kept their foot on the gas and scored two more tries in the opening 10 minutes through TJ McCarney and Ashley Mathias.

The Wanderers did manage to put some good passage of play of their own together, scoring a well-worked try out wide but, with the score at 41-14, the game was all but over.

Archie Picken came off the bench to make his Stewartry first XV debut and bagged himself two tries on the right wing to compound the home side’s misery.

With wanting to give their points difference a good boost in mind, SRFC kept playing until the final whistle and managed to add another two tries through Sam Tait and Kieran
