Steven Gerrard outlines major Aston Villa issue that needs addressing immediately

Steven Gerrard has outlined that in order to push on from their win at Brighton, his Aston Villa side must address their form at Villa Park.

At home so far this season Villa have conceded the fourth most goals, recorded the second lowest expected goals value for and are 14th in points won. Playing at Villa Park is clearly a more strenuous task for the club, with their best performances this season coming in games away from home such as Crystal Palace and Brighton.

One metric that stands out an explains the difference in performances away from home is the work rate of the team out of possession both home and away, which may hint why the aforementioned performances come whilst on the road.

Away from home Villa seem to offer a greater intensity when out of possession, as reflected in their passes allowed per defensive action (PPDA). They allow 10.7 in away games which is currently eighth in terms of pressing intensity. However, at home they average 14.3 PPDA, which is the second lowest press at home in the league.

Speaking on the issue, Gerrard had this to say: "“We need to build on Saturday’s positive win and we need to improve our home form. If everyone applies themselves like they did last weekend it gives us a better chance.

“It is a about resetting after every result. Win, lose or draw it is about focusing on the next one.

“The players were outstanding last week, recovering from a tough defeat against Watford.

"We got our rewards today by executing a good game plan and a good performance.”

12 of Villa's 25 fixtures have been played at home, where they have recorded just four wins so far on the season, with their last win in front of the home crowd being the 2-1 win against Leicester City in early December.
