Steven Gerrard hints at Aston Villa lessons he can take from Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has outlined some of the qualities he admires in Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are taking on Spanish giants Real Madrid in the Champions League final in France as they look to win the competition for the seventh time in their history. Jurgen Klopp led them to victory in the tournament in 2018/19, overcoming Tottenham in the final.

Should they be successful, it will be the third piece of silverware that Liverpool lift this season after success in the FA Cup and League Cup. It comes after previous losses in finals of competitions under Klopp.

But it’s the way he’s bounced back to instil belief into the club that has impressed Gerrard, who is in Paris covering the game. The Villa boss commented on how Klopp has ‘aligned’ the club, something he is looking to do himself at Villa Park.

“He is so calm. He has total belief in his team. He has suffered a bit in finals and has bounced back,” Gerrard on BT Sport before the final.

“He told Liverpool fans he wanted to change them from doubters to believers - he truly has aligned the club from top to bottom.”

The Villa boss also commented on the culture at Liverpool, started by the owner’s appointment of Klopp, something that he could look to replicate at Villa.

“I don’t think you can underestimate the part the owners have played - they have come in and recruited Klopp who has instilled the culture,” he added.

“It’s a combination of different things. But it also takes setbacks and pain to build resistance and come back. Real Madrid will have to go above and beyond to win tonight.”
