Steven Gerrard faces fellow Rangers icon and global great as Ettifaq send 'one for you' message to Ibrox legions

Steven Gerrard’s new club Al-Ettifaq sent a message to Rangers fans as the former Ibrox boss went head to head with another world legend who spent time in Govan.

The ex England captain took charge of the Saudi Pro League outfit in a pre season friendly against Abu Dhabi outfit Al Jazira Club. And the UAE Pro League side are managed by none other than Frank De Boer, who had a short stint at Rangers in 2004 alongside twin brother Ronald when Alex McLeish sighed him from Galatasaray. Gerrard and De Boer were deep in conversation before the game and Al-Ettifaq tagged the snap with the message “One for the Rangers fans”.

Gerrard’s fellow former Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson, who signed a staggering £700,000-a-week deal, was handed the armband for the match in which Scotland stopper Jack Hendry and ex Celtic striker Moussa Dembele also featured. Al-Ettifaq won the game 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mohammed Al Kuwaykibi.

De Boer signed a two-year deal in June to take over at Al Jazira, who finished fifth in the UAE top tier last season. The 53-year-old Dutch legend had been out of work since stepping down as Holland boss after Euro 2020 where they went out to the Czech Republic at the last-16 stage. He has also had spells in charge of Ajax, Crystal Palace and Atlanta United during his managerial career.
