Stephen Robinson handed bumper St Mirren contract as Buddies set to make him highest paid boss ever

Stephen Robinson is set to become the highest paid St Mirren manager ever as he arrives to replace Jim Goodwin.

The Buddies have agreed a two-and-a-half year deal with the former Motherwell boss and he will return to the Premiership on Tuesday.

Goodwin left for Aberdeen and St Mirren have moved quick to replace him having agreed a six figure compensation deal with Morecambe.

He travelled north for talks on Monday and will head to Paisley alongside No.2 Diarmuid O'Carroll.

St Mirren had first moved for Aberdeen captain Scott Brown and then asked to speak to Hearts youth coach Steven Naismith.

They both had backing from within the St Mirren board but others wanted a more experienced appointment.

They then decided they wanted Robinson and made their move on Monday afternoon.

Saints are looking for Robinson to take them on and build on the success of Goodwin.

The next step for the club is making the top six, which Robinson achieved previously with Motherwell, also leading them into Europe.

St Mirren also want to see their own youth players developed, as Robinson did at Motherwell, selling David Turnbull to Celtic and Jake Hastie to Rangers.
