Stephen Dobbie reveals only Queen of the South regret as Palmerston legend gets emotional send off

Stephen Dobbie finally got the chance to say a proper farewell to Queen of the South fans - then admitted his only regret was never managing to fire the Doonhamers into the Premiership.

The Dumfries legend returned to his spiritual home for en emotional testimonial three years after bringing the curtain down on his second spell with the club during the covid season. Across two stints at Queens - with succesfull time down south at Swansea, Blackpool, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Bolton in between - Dobbie hit an incredible 166 goals in 283 appearances.

And speaking after what is sure to be his last appearance at the ground he said: "The first home game I had here was against Dundee in the cup and the fans just seemed to take to me. From there I got my move down south and then I always said I'd come back. I probably could have played higher, but it's what this club means to me.

"Scoring goals for this club was great and my only regret for me is that I didn't get the club up to the Premiership. That was why I wanted to come back. It means everything to me and I'll be back as a fan.

"Some players take a bit more time to realise what you have and don't have at certain clubs. Queens set me on the right track, Ian McCall and then Gordon Chisholm. It was the players as well. We had a great group and they showed me what I could do."

Dobbie was rightly centre of attention but he had to watch Kenny Miller steal the limelight with a hat-trick at his testimonial - then admitted the former Scotland striker was also a big reason he never won a single Scotland cap.
