‘Start a fight’ - Anthony Martial told to use Roy Keane advice in blast at dismal Manchester United display

John Obi Mikel has branded Anthony Martial as the “opposite” of a player who shows they care about their football and personal club form.

The striker put in another dreadful showing during Manchester United’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth and many home fans loudly cheered when he was replaced by Rasmus Hojlund in the second half.

Martial is one of a handful of players United are open to selling this January, with the Frenchman’s contract due to expire next summer. United do have the option of extending his deal by a year but this seems unlikely amid his current status in the side.

Martial, who has scored twice in 19 appearances this season, is behind five-goal Hojlund in the pecking order. His hamstring injury prevented any summer offers being received for the attacker, who has scored one Premier League goal more than Hojlund.

Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel - who was once on the brink of signing for United - has slammed Martial for his latest outing, in which he made just 35 touches, the lowest out of any starter.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, he said of Martial: “I think that’s the word there - his body language. Sometimes when I see him on the pitch, I remember is he still in this team? Nine years he has been at the club!

“It’s one player I never understand what he does at a football club. He moans, he shakes his head. Look at him! Do something! If you’re not playing well, at least kick somebody. Start a fight. Show you care. Anthony Martial is the opposite of that.”

Mikel’s comments echo the now-famous analysis from Roy Keane following United’s 2-0 defeat to Manchester City in 2021,
