Stan Wawrinka news: Three time Grand Slam champion out of the Geneva Open due to injury

It was all going quite well for Stanislas Wawrinka on his comeback following injury, he took part in the Monte Carlo Masters and he made it to the round of 16 at the Italian Open but now he has announced he won’t be playing at the Geneva Open, his home tournament.

Wawrinka got his first win in 15 months on Monday at the Rome Masters when he beat Reilly Opelka, and then he followed it up with another win against Laslo Djere.

The three time Grand Slam champion was out for the majority of the 2021 season due to a foot injury which required two surgeries.

Although he was doing so well in the Italian based competition, he was no match for world No 1 Novak Djokovic who beat the Swiss player 6-2, 6-2.

But Wawrinka has announced he won’t be taking part in the Geneva Open due to injury even though he was awarded a wildcard to take part in his home competition.

“It’s a disappointment because obviously we are in Switzerland, he won the tournament twice, he was the ambassador of the tournament for the first three years after it returned to Geneva,” Thierry Grin, the tournament director, told ATP.

“Unfortunately he is injured.

“It happens.”

Wawrinka’s injury means he won’t have the opportunity to face the likes of Daniil Medvedev who is returning to action after having hernia surgery last month, but he has still managed to maintain his No 2 ranking on the ATP leader board.
