The Italian had lost to the Russian in the Miami final last year but rallied from two sets down to beat him in the Australian Open final in January.

World number three Jannik Sinner moved into the semi-finals of the Miami Open in emphatic style on Wednesday, beating Czech Tomas Machac 6-4, 6-2. Italian Sinner, who won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open this year, will play in his fourth semi of the season after dealing with lively Machac in 91 minutes. Sinner broke the opening game serve from the Czech but Machac responded immediately to make it 1-1. The crowd were on their feet to appreciate some brilliant defensive play from Sinner who eventually took charge of the set, breaking to go 4-3 up and then closing out.

Defending Miami Open champion Daniil Medvedev and top seed Carlos Alcaraz marched into the quarter-finals of the tournament on Tuesday with convincing victories. Medvedev earned a 7-6 (7/5), 6-0 win over Germany's Dominik Koepfer while Alcaraz took care of Italian Lorenzo Musetti with a 6-3, 6-3 win in 85 minutes. Second seed Jannik Sinner of Italy also moved into the last eight beating Christopher O'Connell of Australia 6-4, 6-3.
