St Mirren to make ex-Motherwell boss 'highest paid manager in club's history'

St Mirren are set to make Stephen Robinson their highest-paid manager ever when the former Motherwell manager makes his return to Scottish football today.

The 47-year-old is currently manager of English League One side Morecambe and The Shrimps "reluctantly" gave The Buddies permission to speak to Robinson last night.

And now Daily Record are reporting the Northern Irishman is set to seal a two-and-a-half year deal at St Mirren Park, in a move which will make him their best-paid boss yet.

He will replace Jim Goodwin after he left for Aberdeen on Saturday, and it is being reported a six-figure compensation package has been agreed with Morecambe to release Robinson from his deal at the Mazuma Stadium.

He is expected to be joined in Paisley alongside assistant Diarmuid O'Carroll, who was previously under-18s coach at Fir Park during Robinson's tenure.

And the pair are expected to be in place later today ahead of St Mirren's Premiership clash at Dundee tomorrow night.

The Buddies are currently a point adrift of Robinson's former club in seventh place in the Premiership and could leap frog Motherwell into the top six if they win that game in hand over their rivals.

Robinson, who managed the Steelmen between 2017-2020 and guided them to two cup finals as well as Europa League qualification, would make his Fir Park return on April 2 when the Motherwell play host in the league.

He will become the second ex-Well gaffer to make a return to Scotland's top flight in the past week, following Mark McGhee's appointment at Dundee.
