Squid Game fans 'disappointed' as Netflix confirms season 2 release date and major update
Squid Game fans have hit out after Netflix confirmed the long-awaited release date of its second season. The streamer also announced a third series is on its way, which will also be the drama's last.
Squid Game's first season holds the record as Netflix's most-watched series ever, racking up over 1.65 billion viewing hours within the first 28 days of its launch. The announcement of a second season came shortly after the initial release, and fans have been on tenterhooks for any new trailers, images, plot details, and of course, the release date.
Netflix has now confirmed that Squid Game season two will be launched on December 26, with Seong Gi-hun set to pursue the creators of the lethal game. A third and final season is also slated for release in 2025.
Series director, writer, and executive producer Hwang Dong-hyuk confirmed the news in a letter to fans. "I am beyond excited to be writing this letter to announce the date for Season 2 and share the news of Season 3, the final season," he penned. "The fierce clash between [Gi-hun and Front Man's] two worlds will continue into the series finale with Season 3, which will be brought to you next year."
Netflix also released a plot teaser that hints at high stakes: "Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 remains determined to find the people behind the game and put an end to their vicious sport.
"Using this fortune to fund his search, Gi-hun starts with the most obvious of places: look for the man in a sharp suit playing ddakji in the subway. But when his efforts finally yield results, the path toward taking down the organization proves to be deadlier than he imagined: to end the game, he needs to re-enter it."
