Springhill Boxing Club's 'new generation' take Development Championship medals

Springhill Boxing Club took three golds and a silver from the Scottish Development Championships at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility in Motherwell in October.

The tournament, held over two weekends, saw major success for the Shotts club.

On the first weekend, Blake Lynch won gold in the 2007 52kgs category in his first ever contest, stopping his opponent from the Wellmeadow Boxing Club in the first minute of the opening round.

On the second weekend, brothers Kaden and Jack Connor both won gold, while Lewis Whitelaw won silver, in what was their first time in a boxing ring.

Kaden won the 2010 42kg category against an opponent from North Glasgow Boxing Club, while Jack won the 2011 35.5kgs category against a Chirnside Boxing Club fighter.

Lewis Whitelaw fought a very close final in the 2009 42kgs category, but was unlucky to come away with a silver.

Jonathan McGowan, Max Urquhart and Craig Ritchie all lost in very close semi-finals.

Billy McPhee won his semi-final but was unable to take part in the final, while Sophie Wright was in the 2008 70kgs category, but didn’t have an opponent available.

Head coach Frank Delaney said: “It was fantastic.

“We won three golds and a silver and we could have had more – I reckon one of them we should have won but didn’t get the decision, and another was very close and could have gone either way.

“In one of them I thought my boy won every round and we didn’t get it, but the result isn’t bad – three golds and a silver.

“It’s good for these young boxers to get a bit of confidence. That’s the new bunch, the new generation.

“These kids are very good, one or two of them surprised me, because you don’t really know
