Springhill boxers take gold and silver medals at Scottish Novice Championships

Springhill ABC coach Frank Delaney was delighted to get some of his young boxers on their path in the sport during the Scottish Novice Championships at Ravenscraig earlier this month.

The Shotts club took four golds and a silver from the competition in Motherwell, from 13 boxers who were entered, but Delaney says those who didn’t win still did well.

In the first weekend, John Deighan beat David McDonald from The Edinburgh Boxing Academy (TEBA) at 48kg, while Ethan Storrie (34kg) beat Jacobites fighter Jay Breathet.

Kai Grant stopped Marley Johnson from IMC in the first minute of their 68kg bout to win gold in the second weekend, an d Mark Hutchinson (52kg) beat Inverclyde’s Logan McEwan.

Lewis Swan took silver following a 2-1 split decision against Aiden McDonald of North Glasgow in their 54kg contest.

Proud Delaney said: “We had 13 entries and on the first weekend we got two gold medals, and on the second weekend we won two gold and a silver.

“That’s some good results and a few young stars in the making. It’s a good wee squad, and I was really pleased with them.

“It should have been five golds. I don’t want to complain too much, but I thought Lewis Swan got robbed!

“They all did well, and they were all having their first fights, bar two of them. I was pleased with them all, they all did very well, and that’s them started, now.

“We’ve got the Western Districts coming up, so I’ll be putting some of them in for that as well.”
