Springboks' frail flyhalf debate: Who would our writers choose for a Test this week?
Springbok team management are probably quite grateful there's no Six Nations - though rumours persist of such a gig from 2025 onwards - to pariticpate in currently because that would've meant coach Jacques Nienaber wouldn't have any of his three flyhalves from last year available.
Handre Pollard and Elton Jantjies are both injured, while the evergeen Morne Steyn announced his retirement from Test rugby.
Johan Goosen's brilliant start of his chapter at Loftus also put him on the radar before a long-term knee injury struck him down again.
It's understood that Nienaber and co are keen to use 2022 as a platform to explore locally-based options with an eye on building further depth towards next year's Currie Cup.
Yet, at least in the No 10 jersey, the candidates wouldn't exactly be clear-cut if the Boks were forced to play a Test this weekend.
With a figurative gun to the head, our writers make their selections for this "SOS" situation.
Herman Mostert's pick: FRANS STEYN
If I was the Bok coach this week, I'd consider drafting in the experienced and versatile Frans Steyn.
Steyn's potent boot is an asset to any side and he'll slot in seamlessly into the Bok game plan at pivot.Other options are Damian Willemse and Curwin Bosch, but with the former not playing at flyhalf for the Stormers and the latter only recently finding his way back to form, drafting them straight into the Bok No 10 slot would be too risky.Frans Steyn would be the safe bet.
He's solid on defence, plays a sound tactical game and his kicking range gives the team an extra weapon in slotting long-range penalties. You can't buy experience - therefore Steyn would be by my go-to man in this "SOS" flyhalf scenario.
Kamva Somdyala's pick: DAMIAN WILLEMSE
