SPFL explain Rangers vs Ross County controversial call off as Police Scotland role revealed

Scottish Professional Football League chiefs called off Rangers' clash with Ross County after consultation with the police.

The early call was made on the Ibrox clash as the Ross County team bus was left stuck on the A96, after the road was closed following a couple of accidents due to heavy snow. Police Scotland couldn’t give any guarantees that the County bus could get down for the 7.45pm kick-off and so after discussions with SPFL officials they called off the game.

An SPFL statement confirmed: "Following consultation with Police Scotland regarding today’s weather conditions on the A9, the Rangers v Ross County match has been postponed". It means Rangers now have two games in hand over leaders Celtic. If they were to win them they would go one point clear. This cancellation means Celtic will go into the winter break top of the Premiership.

Rangers assistant manager Stephan Van Der Heyden admitted the call off was something of a surprise. Van Der Hayden, speaking on X, said: “I cannot even remember when I had a game postponed……” It is also the second game on the bounce that Ross County have seen called off. Their home clash with Hibs was called off at the weekend because of the weather. Derek Adams’ side now have three games in hand on some of their rivals.
